Driving with airless tyres might soon be reality according to the Michelin Uptis propotype.
With the introduction of the Uptis (Unique Puncture-proof Tyre System), Michelin is taking a leap into the future. Car tyres without air would have revolutionary benefits.
Tyre pressure is one of the most important factors for car tyres nowadays, but at the same time also the only factor which can neither be influenced or controlled by manufactures. Partly due to this, tyres could wear faster because drivers frequently doesn’t run the correct tyre pressure. Among this, incorrect tyre pressure also heavily affects driving performances. With the new Uptis-technology this all is no longer an issue. The air has been replaced for flexible rubber ‘spokes’ which will adapt to the surface. These spokes form, in a zigzag shape, the connection between the tread and wheel. The advantages of airless car tyres are immense. Drivers will no longer get punctures and thanks to the unique flexible spokes the tyres absorb the blows of, for example, manhole covers, unevenness in the road and curbs. Which will lead to decreased down times for as well vehicle fleet operators as end-users.
Additional benefit; These tyres will last much longer, have a better kilometre cost price and are also sizable more environmental friendly.
The tyre will be further developed and extensively tested in the coming years. Thus, several sources confirm that the Uptis will be tested on a fleet of Chevrolet Bolts later in 2019.
According to the current expectations, the finished version will reach production cars as soon as 2024.
